Required Courses
1. Usul Al-Din
This course explores the foundation of Din and concentrates on Divinity
(Uluhiyyah) and Prophecy (Nubuwwah). Topics include: Distinction
between Iman and Islam; religion and religious thought; belief in
Allah; impact of belief on the behavior of individuals and society; concept
of Prophethood and Message; characteristics of the Message sent to Prophet
Muhammad (s); the end of Prophethood; the concept of Akhirah; the impact
of belief in the Last Day on morality; the Last Day; and Resurrection.
2. Aqidah and Living Islam
This course will examine the concepts of Aqidah and Tawhid
both as religious experience and worldview and as essential components and
characteristics of the Islamic worldview. The course emphasizes the importance
of addressing the new social and theological issues facing Muslims from
the Tawhidic perspective. This necessitates a genuine understanding
of the implication of Tawhid in a multi-religious society. Topics
include: The essence of Tawhid in Islam; the implication of Tawhid
on the social, economic, and political levels; definition of Shirk
and Bid'ah. Tawhid and its effect on dialogue with other religions
will also be covered.
3. The Sirah of Prophet Muhammad (s)
The course deals with the birth and life of Prophet Muhammad (s) before
and after Prophethood at Makkah; Phases and stages of his call; al-Isra'
and al-Mi'raaj; Hijrah to Madinah; Establishment of state
at Madinah; Expansion of Da'wah beyond Arabia; Ghazwaat; The
conquest of Makkah; Hajjatul Wid'a; The success and impact of his
life and work; The journey to Allah.
4. Fiqh for Everyday Life
The course will cover the study of the Shari'ah regulations pertaining
to a Muslim's daily life, their significance and application. Topics include:
clothing (libas), drink and food (al-at'imah wa al-ashribah)
and the rules of good behavior (adab) in the family, school, work
place and public life in general.
5. Family Life in Islam
The course addresses the issues: definition of Usrah (family) in
Islam, marriage and its conditions and regulations, polygamy, Mut'ah,
rights and duties in the family, divorce, 'Ilaa, Zihar, Li'aan, Khul'a,
and the system of inheritance and legacy in Islam.
